Havant Ladies 1's travelled away to
Surbiton to face the
league leaders with the sole intention to win and close the gap at the
top down
to 3 points.
It was actually in question as to whether or not the game was to go
ahead after
the appalling weather conditions had flooded one of the two Surbiton
pitches. The wind, rain and cold did not present a barrier and
the game
went ahead as planned.
Have you heard this before - Havant totally dominated the first ten
minutes in
so much that they had all the possession and Surbiton never actually
got into
our half for the first 3minutes. Havant had the inevitable short
corners
as a result but were unable to convert the 3 shorts we gained in the
first 6
minutes. However you look at it this must have a detrimental
effect on
the confidence of the team but they continued to apply the screw.
It was not until about 15 minutes in that Surbiton began to flex
muscles with a
number of powerful breaks into the Havant D.
Some great defensive work and
goalkeeping by Paula Hurrel kept the home side at bay as the game
flowed at
both ends. Havant had more possession in the first half but went
in one
down after what looked like a good goal from a spectators perspective
but was actually
a miss hit that happened to end in the top right hand corner.
After the interval Havant kept coming forward but conceded a second
after a
well worked attacked from Surbiton. Havant stuck to their plan
and
managed to finally score from one of their eleven shorts with Jo
faulkner
converting from the top of the D. Surbiton gained a third after a
defensive error and Havant ran out even though they had more possession
of the
ball in the second phase
"The team must start to believe that they can score goals and finish
teams
off early. Surbiton must have considered that they had a game on
their
hands after the first few minutes but showed why they are current
league
leaders"
Cleave Faulkner
