Havant Men's 1st XI
A Little Background
Havant has a rich history of playing hockey at the highest level, having won the national Championships on a number of occasions in it’s illustrious history. Especially in the late 80s and early 90s, the club became synonymous with high performance hockey in the south, and we have worked hard to maintain that reputation ever since. The club is home to a host of former and current international players, and today can boast about the fact that it has more junior internationals in the current England teams than any other club in England.
This tradition is continued today by the men’s 1st XI, which is based around a strong core of the most talented regional players, complimented by junior internationals (5 at present), and a select few outstanding national and international players. For this year, the club has set it’s sights on promotion to the men’s Premier League
Professional Support
In the last two years, the support staff at Havant Hockey Club have worked hard at providing a professional environment in which players can thrive. For the 2011/12 hockey season, the players at Havant will once again be supported with professional video analysis software from DartFish and SportsCode, and the team will continue it's liaison with Team Performance Exchange. This provides an environment in which players are able to analyse their own technical and tactical performance on the basis of up-to-date video. In addition, the team will continue to use the services of the Sports Science Consultancy Unit from the University of Winchester, who have in the past been responsible for fitness testing and designing the off-the-pitch training programme.

We have worked hard to put a support staff together, which we feel could help transform the squad into a promotion challengers. In Jim Drury and Steve Lawson we have two members who are Havant through and through. Both have a wealth of experience of hockey at the highest level, and understand what it takes to create successful teams. Phil Maunder continues to provide outstanding training, rehabilitation and injury management support. In addition to being Havant Hockey's physiotherapist, Phil has spent a number of years being one of the staff physios at the Welsh Hockey Union, and has been to a number of international tournaments with a variety of teams. Ady Adams joins us this year, having spend a number of very successful seasons at Winchester Hockey Club. Ady will be in charge of the 2nd team, and responsible for the development of young and talented players with 1st XI ambitions and capabilities. In addition, he will be assistant coach to the first XI.
Merijn van Willigen starts his third year at the club, having achieved Premier League promotion with two consecutive women's teams (Trojans and Clifton), and a bronze medal as an assistant coach with the Welsh Senior women in Rome, 2009. In addition to being a coach, Merijn is an academic in the Sports Studies Department at the University of Winchester.
