04/03/17 : Mens 1 vs Guildford

Away - Broadwater School

Won 5 - 0

News filtered through prior to this late 3.00pm push back that Bromley & Beckenham had lost 3-1 away at Banbury. A 5-0 victory now puts us one point behind Bromley with a game in hand with a vastly superior goal difference.

Neither Guildford or Havant took the advantage in the first five minutes, but Havant had the first chance in the 6th minute after a free hit outside the circle found James Speke who shot across the goal. Two minutes later Adam Bloomfield found James Speke on the penalty spot and as the keeper came sliding out James tried to flick over him into the roof of the net, but the keeper made a good save. Havant started to build up pressure, but Guildford had a good chance to the level the score in the 12th minute, but Chris Bristow in the Havant goal made a good save. In the 14th minute Maciej was set up for a shot in front of goal, but he failed to control the ball and the chance went.
Havant won their first penalty corner in the 15th minute, which was saved by the Guildford keeper. In the 18th minute Guildford won their first penalty corner, but the flick did not trouble Bristow who patted it away. Havant should have taken the lead in the 20th minute after a turnover in midfield; the ball was moved to Mike Deller-Merricks who drew the keeper to set up James Speke, but James shot was wide of the goal. A minute later Maciej topped a shot in front of goal after Niall Stott had cleverly set him up. Havant were building up considerable pressure playing some excellent approach hockey through the midfield, but the final pass often went astray.
Havant went ahead in the 26th minute after sustained pressure. Adam Seccull converted his second penalty corner of the game with a straight flick. It was now all Havant and further chances were created, but none taken as the half time whistle sounded.
A very sloppy second half start from Havant allowed Guildford their second penalty corner, which was charged down. Havant only had to wait four minutes to go further in front after Adam Bloomfield robbed a defender, ran into the circle and drew the keeper, setting up Niall Stott for a simple tap in. In the 44th minute Niall Stott won Havant's third penalty corner, which was saved by the Guildford keeper. A minute later Niall who was outstanding all game, provided a chance for Deller-Merricks who had his shot saved. On 50 minutes Niall Stott nearly had his second, but his shot was deflected in front of goal by Deller-Merricks for Havant’s third.
Havant’s fourth penalty corner in the 59th minute made after a good run from Duncan Marsh into the circle produced Seccull's second goal of the game, after a slick move at the top of the circle, giving Havant a four goal lead. Two minutes later Havant went five goals up after Maciej was body checked in the circle. The penalty corner routine was not up to the normal standard and not stopped at the top of the circle, but after some clever inter changes through five players Speke had the opportunity to get on the score sheet for Havant’s fifth.
Guildford did have the odd forage into the Havant half, and on one of these occasions Bristow made a smart save, but Havant were now well on top and despite further chances they could not increase the lead.
