Havant Hockey Club – Men’s Section

Season 2018/19

Objectives: To develop top class players, thrive in the National League and provide competitive, enjoyable hockey at all levels

Havant hockey Club is focused both on the development of top class players, as well as provision of good quality, competitive, enjoyable hockey. All our teams participate in league hockey and naturally we aim to put out competitive sides, who others want to beat. We never forget that hockey is a social game and an excellent way of forging lifelong friendships, especially if you are new to the area. We welcome back those who have stopped playing hockey (for whatever reason) and wish to return to this great sport.

Havant Men’s 1 st achieved a solid mid-table position in National Conference West last season, having been out of National League hockey for the 3 previous seasons. This time round, we will be looking to finish in the top 5 to maintain National League status, given the re structuring of the league in season 2019/20. The team prepares in a professional way, having pre season training well before the start of the season and training twice a week during the season under the direction of coaches, Raj Laly and Warren Gilmour as well as manager Steve Lawson. In addition, Olympic gold medallist and ex-Havant star, current England Assistant coach Russel Garcia, has led training sessions. Players are expected to ne 100% committed to the success of the team. It is pleasing that several players from the youth set up have made their way into the 1sts, an age old Havant tradition.

The majority of home games are on a Sunday and we look to draw in a large and noisy crowd to give the team maximum support. Refreshments are available pitch-side for Sunday home games

The Men’s 2s were relegated from Hants/Surrey Division 1 last year and will be looking to bounce back 1 st time round. The team contains many top quality players who will be looking to gain a place in the 1s. They train with the 1s every Tuesday evening, which provides an excellent opportunity to develop as well as impress the 1s management team.

The mens’ 3 rd XI consists of a number of ex 1s and 2s players who now play more for enjoyment as opposed to competing at the top level. They play in Hampshire Division 1, which often involves playing against 1s and 2s from other clubs

The men’s 4s were promoted back to Hampshire Division 3 last season, scoring an impressive number of goals on the way. They also play in the National Tier 4 cup competition

The mens 5s play in Hampshire Division 5 (and in a Hampshire Cup competition, having agonisingly lost the semi final on strokes last season) and the 6s play in Hampshire Division 7.

3 rd to 6 th XI teams consist of a wide variety of ages, ranging from 14 year old juniors to veterans of 55 years. Younger players are assigned to the team best suited for their hockey development.

Club training for all teams below the 2s takes place on Wednesday evenings 7:30 to 9:30 PM

Veterans Hockey

Havant has 2 veterans teams, The Bees (over 35s) and Cavaliers (over 50s).  The Bees play in the Wessex Masters Division 2 and the Wessex Masters over 50s cup. The Cavaliers play in the Wessex Supervets Alliance. In reality, the average age of both teams is over 60, but they remain competitive in their respective competitions. The club also enters the National over 60s cup.

Some of our veterans have represented England Masters in their respective age groups.

If you want to play for Havant, then I am sure there is a team which meets your desire for competition and enjoyment. Drop me a line gavin.lane24@virginmedia.com or just come along to one of our training nights. You will be very welcome
