15/10/17 : Mens 1 vs Clifton Robinsons
Home - Havant College
Won 5 - 2
Havant recorded their first win of the league campaign with a good first half and an indifferent second.
Clifton Robinsons had the first chance of the game winning an early penalty corner in the 4th minute after a Havant defender failed to protect his feet, but Chris Bristow made a save from a poor flick at goal.
A minute later Mike Deller-Merricks who was carrying a foot injury made a good run into the right of the circle and along the goal line, but his cross could not find Maciej Janiszewski who was waiting for a tap in on the far post. In these early spells it was Havant who were dictating the play and there were a number of circle entries that came to nothing.
Havant had to wait until the 10th minute to take the lead after Raj Laly had drilled the ball into the circle to find Maciej who deflected the ball past Andy Hughes in the visitors goal. A minute later Havant were two goals in front after Maciej and Sam Hatherley had combined well in midfield to allow Sam to enter the visitors circle where he won a penalty corner. Tosseq Arshad stepped up and flicked the ball into the bottom corner of the goal for his first since arriving last week.
In the 15th minute Havant were three goals in front from their second penalty corner of the game. The injection was not stopped, but Toseeq cleverly span and moved the ball onto Matt Cox who in turn set up Ethan Hoddle to score his first league goal fro Havant. Havant were now in control and moved the ball round with confidence. A long high ball from Toseeq from the back nearly found Dan Ferrier with only the keeper to beat, but the bounce evaded him. Havant had a great chance to stretch the lead to four in the 30th minute after Deller-Merricks made a great run along the bye line finding Adam Bloomfield on the far post, but unfortunately Adam’s flick at goal went the wrong side of the post with the keeper beaten.
The teams went into the half with Havant three goals up, but they needed Chris Bristow to deny Clifton Robinsons with two smart saves with a minute left on the clock.
One had the feeling the second half was going to produce a similar pattern from the first and an opportunity for Havant to extend their lead. Within two minutes Jack Stubbings and Ethan Hoddle were unmarked in the opposition circle with just the Clifton Robinsons keeper to beat. Andy Hughes closed down Jack’s shot well, but one could not wonder whether it would have been better to slip the ball to Ethan and eliminate the keeper, creating an open goal.
Havant first half dominace was not to be repeated after Clifton Robinsons had made some tactical half time adjustments to restrict the home sides distribution. Havant were slow to counteract this and what resulted was twenty minutes of dominance from Clifton Robinsons. Clifton Robinsons pulled a goal back in the 37th minute from open play and after a melee in front of goal Tom Jarvie found the back board. Four minutes latter Clifton Robinsons sent a shot over Havant’s bar and then had a goal correctly disallowed, and a long corner was awarded. From this corner the ball was hit into the circle to be defected into the Havant goal by Tom Bryant. It transpired after the game that Clifton Robinsons admitted they did not get a touch on the ball.
Clifton Robinsons were now right back in the game and threw attack after attack at Havant who struggled to get a hold on the game. Craig Duffy after a great run won a penalty corner in the 52nd minute and this was the opportunity to wrestle back the initiative but Toseeq flicked wide of the goal. Havant slowly took control of the game again, but the visitors continued to look dangerous on the break.
It was Maciej who settled the home supporters nerves in the 64th minute after a rebound of the Clifton Robinsons keeper fell to Maciej, who riffled a shot past Hughes. A minute later Maciej had the ball into the goal again, but the goal was disallowed for an elbow on a defender, which looked harsh. Havant were now moving forward with more purpose but the final pass in the circle went astray too often.
Clifton Robinsons made the positive move to play a kicking back by removing their keeper and this happened just after they went down to 10 men after a green card. Unfortunately for them they ended up with 12 men on the field which resulted in a yellow card and they were down to 10 men for the remaining minutes. Havant exploited the numerical advantage winning a corner in the xx minute and Toseeq secured his man of the match award by flicking the ball into the netting to make the final score 5-2.
