Havant Ladies 1s 2 - 3 Southampton Ladies 1s
Havant’s rise up the league table was abruptly halted this weekend after Southampton came off better in a five goal thriller. Southampton went into an early lead in the 5th minute from their first penalty corner of the game. Veteran and player coach Sue Merry finished a slick alternative routine deflecting the ball high into the Havant net. It did not take long before Havant were back on level terms after the unmarked Elisabeth Allen finished off a move that entered the right hand side of the circle by lifting the ball into the visitors goal in the 10th minute. Both sides pressed for the advantage, and Havant had a penalty corner disallowed after a high shot from a penalty shot, but they had to settle for a 1-1 scoreline at half time.
In the second half, as was the case in the first, there was little between the two sides in what was a high tempo game with plenty of action at both ends. It was the visitors that went ahead six minutes after the re-start, after a superb solo goal from ex Havant player Zoe Stride. After picking up the ball wide on the left she danced her way passed a number of Havant defenders into the circle and when in front of goal she sent a rasping shot against the back board. Louise Taylor levelled the scoreline for Havant in the 51st minute with a well placed shot into the corner of the goal from another penalty corner.
In the last ten minutes either team could have snatched the win, but it went to Southampton after a pass into the circle found an unmarked forward who shot at goal, and as the ball was on line to pass the far post a Southampton forward cleverly deflected it goal bound for the winner and three points.
