After a rather tricky and indifferent preseason the Havant 5’s were not really sure how the season was going to start. The team arrived for the first match of the new season hoping they could get off to a good start in the league.
Thankfully Havant had an early ball bouncing around the D and the goal mouth which eventually found itself in the back of the net. The game was tight for the next quarter with chances for both teams until Havant converted a short corner. Another goal made it 3-0 at halftime.
Havant came out in the second half “wide awake” which is unusual, having being caught out in the previous two matches. Petersfield were a continuous threat on the Havant goal but a goal in the first quarter of the second half pretty much sealed the points. Havant maintained concentration until the end with a further two more goals. An exciting game with Havant providing a number of goal threats from different people which bodes well for the season.
The match ended with a 6 – 0 score line to Havant. Everyone pleased with a win and a clean sheet. The result putting Havant top of the league after one match. Do not get carried away boys.
The team was set up with Matt “Weeksy” in goal providing plenty of chat from between the posts and the occasional dance around the hockey ball. Harry W produced another fine display directing operations at the back, ably assisted by Sunny. Sunny had a great game in defence and a superb effort tipped over the bar midway through the second half on one of his trips forward. We had Ed managing the left hand side of the defence, James on the right hand side and Brian (with his young legs) filling in the back line keeping the young Petersfield forward line in check.
In the middle we had Barny marauding around the pitch as usual creating havoc and creating some great chances from the top of the D. We also Bose (the old man on the pitch, so says Ed) running his 3.67 miles or was it 3.57 miles and we had Paul M muttering that he was finally pleased to see some proper short passing after five years of trying!.
The attack was led by “two goal” Breamo (when he decided to run), who is beginning to enjoy his partnership up front with “four goal” Lloydie (who can still run most of the time). Then we had 3D Scott, the twirling Luke and of course our Manager Nav running the righthand side of the pitch.
In the dugout (well just outside of course) we had Gav, Dave LP and Ash with no intention of playing but providing support.
A good team effort all round, including Martin our umpire for the day.
We look forward to the next match with cautions optimism and hopefully a trip to the Hayling Bar (but only six of us!).
