12/05/18 : Boys Under 18 vs Canterbury (EH Cup Final)
Away - Lee Valley OIympic Park
Lost 3 - 4
Just edged in a tense and equally matched final, full of action
Pre-match tactics started well, with some Canterbury players temporarily blinded by the neon of Havant’s new out-of-the-box Team Puffa Jackets, which can apparently also be seen from space.
The match started even better for the boys as we were quickly 2-0 up courtesy of Freddie Hares and some excellent early pressure. This was not at all what Canterbury were expecting and it took them some time to recover.
But they had a strong attack, led by Teague Marcano (Trinidad and Tobago U21 player) and pulled back three goals and went in to the break leading 3-2.
However, from the start of the second half, Havant continued to press, with some close near-misses. Canterbury scored again against the run of play but the boys didn’t let a two-goal deficit demoralise them and Ethan Hoddle added a third after a set piece.
As the clock ticked down, Havant continued to create chances and were unlucky not to be back in the lead, thwarted by excellent goalkeeping by Canterbury’s Cameron Langdale.
The boys were awarded a short corner as the final whistle was blown and so had the chance to equalise and take it to penalties, but just couldn’t get it in the net.
A very close match against two excellent teams and Havant were desperately unlucky not to have won it. There is, of course, always next year!
Overall, a fantastic team performance from a talented group of boys. Good luck to those going off to Uni. There are some University teams who will not believe their luck in October.
Finally, the management/coaching team are very proud of their display and for the match officials to say it was the best game of hockey they'd seen for a while at the Olympic Park is testament to how good and closely fought match this was. Well done all.
