07/10/18 : Mens 1 vs Isca

Home - Havant College

Won 3 - 1

Our men ran out 3-1 home winners with a solid performance, with Havant’s third goal being a contender for goal of the season.
The early exchanges slightly favoured Havant, but the Isca defence were well drilled continually stepping in front of Havant’s forwards. Havant had to wait until the 10th minute to have their first clear cut chance, but the Isca defence scrambled the ball away to safety after a goal mouth melee. Havant continued to build momentum, but were guilty of attacking too much down the middle creating turnovers for the visitors. Havant also tried to dribble past too many Isca players rather than play with width.
Despite territorial advantage it was Isca who took the lead in the 17th minute from their first of two penalty corners won during the game. Their routine broke down, but it did finally present an opportunity for Tom Whitwoth who reacted quicker than anyone else to flick the ball high into the net.
Two minutes later Charlie Stubbings nearly brought Havant level, but his run past several defenders into the circle was checked by the Isca keeper who quickly closed him down. The resulting free hit eventually saw Mike Deller-Merricks deflect the ball high over the bar.
Fithteen year Harry Croft-Baker continued to impress and was the next Havant player to carve out a chance after making a great run along the byeline eventually centring,  but no Havant forward could get a stick on the ball.
Eventually with five minutes to half time Havant scored the equaliser that they deserved. Federico Bertoni converted Havant’s first penalty corner flicking the ball low and hard straight down the middle of the goal with sufficient pace to squeeze under the keeper before he could drop to the ground. Charlie Stubbings had a chance with two minutes left on the clock, but the resulting shot found the outside of the side netting and the two clubs went into half time level.
Maciej Pacanowski pulled of a great save two minutes into the second half and a minute later Charlie Stubbings tested the Isca keeper at the other end. This lead to Havant’s second penalty corner of the game and once again Federico Bertoni converted. His first flick was saved with the rebound coming straight back to him. Federico placed the ball on his left foot and riffled a reverse shot into the corner of the goal in the 39th minute.
Another Havant penalty corner swiftly followed after Charlie Stubbings danced round a couple of defenders in the circle and was eventually fouled. This time Havant worked a variation which did not go to plan and the chance went begging. Shortly after this Charlie Stubbings left the game injured, an injury that saw him go off to hospital after the game for an x-ray on his shoulder.
The momentum of the game was now all with Havant who piled on the pressure. Craig Duffy and Matt Cox masterminded the midfield producing Havant's most effective hockey. Havant kept good possession, were patient and deployed excellent running off the ball into good positions to receive the ball. These tactics opened up the Isca defence on numerous occasions. This pressure paid dividends in the 54th minute after Ethan Hoddle threaded a pass from the half way line through the Isca midfield and defence into the circle for Jack Stubbings to coming sprinting in and diving he deflected the ball into the visitors goal.
Isca to their credit continued to mount attacks and from one of these attacks they won their second penalty corner, one which was saved by Maciej Pacanowski. Debutant Portuguese International Miguel Rodrigues won Havant’s fourth penalty corner after running round four Isca defenders in the circle before being fouled. This corner was saved and late in the game there was nearly a repeat of Jack Stubbings goal, but this time from the right after Mike Deller-Merricks sent a ball into the circle where Miguel ran in and dived getting a touch on the ball but sending it wide of the goal.
