20/10/18 : Mens 1 vs Fareham
Home - Havant College
Won 2 - 1
The team took all three points in the local derby against Fareham in what was a tense affair with Havant shading the first half and Fareham the second.
The first chance of the game fell to Fareham in the 4th minute, but the shot lacked accuracy and did not trouble Maciej Pacanowski in the Havant goal. There was little between the teams in the first 10 minutes with Havant being guilty of not keeping possession of the ball with Fareham creating turnovers. These early turnovers created territory advantage for the visitors restricting Havant to break aways. It was from one of these breakaways in the 18th minute that saw Havant take the lead. Craig Duffy won the ball in our half and after carrying it over the half way line moved the ball to Charlie Stubbings who on approaching the Fareham circle slipped the ball to Ethan Hoddle who in turn span in front of the keeper giving a pass to Mike Deller-Merricks who found the empty goal to give Havant the lead.
A couple of minutes later Maciej Pacanowski came to Havant’s rescue after he saved at close range. He could however not prevent Fareham levelling the score in the 31st minute at Fareham’s first penalty corner of the game. Jonathan Price was quickest to react from a rebound after the first attempt on goal was saved to put Fareham on level terms.
It looked liked the teams would go into the half time break locked at 1-1, when Charlie Stubbings scored a good individual goal running into the circle along the bye line eliminating a number of defenders before squeezing the ball into the Fareham goal at the near post.
The goalless second half did not provide exciting flowing hockey with Fareham having the lions share of territory. Havant looked dangerous on numerous attacks but lacked the finesse to punish the visitors. Fareham won their second penalty corner in the 41st minute which resulted in a long corner. Havant won their first penalty corner of the game in the 48th minute which resulted in two retakes before a variation broke down.
In the 53rd minute Maciej in the Havant goal pulled out an outstanding save when an unmarked Fareham forward was found unmarked, but his shot was deflected wide by Havant's Polish International keeper.
Havant's attacks centred around Matt Cox who had another great game and was instrumental in most of Havant’s attacks, whilst Charlie Stubbings always looked dangerous moving forward, feeding Miguel Rodrigues, Akhtar Ali who arrived from Pakistan late on Thursday and Havant’s other forwards. Fareham were very effective winning several penalty corners running up the right wing and cutting into the circle.
Fareham and Havant won two further penalty corners, but these were all well defended by both teams. Havant’s best open play chances fell to Matthew Boote who had an open shot on goal saved and also Boote who deflected a cross from Akhtar Ali that was well saved at the Fareham’s keepers near post.
This result sees Isca and Fareham at the bottom of the table with only one point separating teams from 8th to 2nd in the table.
