So last match before half-term and we were ready for a tough match. Basingstoke came hard at us early, forcing our mids and defenders to show off their defensive skills. It sent the tone for the hockey-sized game of ping-pong that was about to ensue. Emily was given a solid warm up by their forwards but her dives, kicks and swats were enough to keep Basingstoke at bay with some great defensive play from Laura, Dee, Sooz and Phoebe to clear the balls back out and up the pitch to Leah and Nikki to run them up to the Sue, Sophie, Tiz and Steady to take them up. Sadly only a few of our runs made it into the D for any serious attempts on goal and Basingstoke managed to get the ball back for their own goes on goal. Despite a couple of short corners to close the first-half, our defence stood their ground and the half-time score was 0-0. We knew we had to work on stretching the pitch with the forwards, especially on hit outs, and switching the ball round the back for the second half. The second half, we meant business, but so did they. Strawbs and Ella were in the think of it with their work cut out in the middle, redistributing the ball and breaking down Basingstoke before they could put us in any danger. We chased the balls down faster and managed to win a few short corners. One even resulted in a P-flick which sadly went wide. Despite our hard work, near the end of the second half Basingstoke managed to break through our ranks and score. The game kicked up a gear again but sadly there wasn't enough time left for us to return the favour and even the score line despite our best effort. The final score was 0-1 for Basingstoke.
