Oxford Hawks Men’s 1s 3 - 5 Havant Men’s 1s
Havant took another step forward today with a fine performance and victory away at Oxford Hawks.
The game started with Havant in control and they created some good chances, with James Speke having a goal bound shot blocked on the line by an Oxford defender. Then a couple of half chances were not converted and Oxford countered and on their first visit into the Havant circle, won a penalty corner.
Jack Biggs the leagues leading goal scorer stepped up and finished well to give Oxford the lead in the 9th minute. However Havant continued to control the early stages and were soon level four minutes later, with Jamie Rawlings converting his own flick from a penalty corner.
Two minutes later and Oxford were in front again, from another Jack Biggs flick which slammed into the Havant backboard. This seemed to unsettle Havant who now needed to be more careful in their defensive circle. Oxford however won a third Penalty Corner in overtime at the end of the first quarter. This time Maciek Pacanowski was equal to the Jack Biggs effort saving down low to his left.
Soon after the quarter break in the 26th minute Havant pulled level with Maciej Janiszewski finishing off a slick move down the Havant right. Craig Duffy who had been fouled near the half way line took a quick self pass eliminating the three Oxford players around him and fed Miguel Rodrigues who linked well with Harry Croft-Baker to set up Maciej.
Havant started the second half as they had the first and in the 37 minute, Miguel Rodrigues finished well with an upright reverse shot, after Tahsin Chowdhury edged a ball towards goal.
To their credit Oxford kept fighting and started to press the Havant defence and grabbed an equaliser in the 58 minute with Freddie Smith on hand this time. Maciej Pacanowski now held strong and made some good saves to keep Havant in the game with both George Harrison and Harry Croft-Baker helping him to clear the threat.
The seventh goal of the day, came via a penalty stroke with a defender blocking a goal bound shot with his foot and it was converted, with confidence, by Maciej Janiszewski in the 62nd minute. Bradley Lock and Eryk Bembenek linked well after Matthew Boote had fed the ball forward to create the chance.
Then with 5 minutes left in the game Harry Croft-Baker pushed forward and beat two Oxford defenders at the top of the circle and fed Bradley Lock who grabbed his first National League goal and gave Havant a two goal lead.
Havant held on to get their first win of the season.
